About the Author
Nathan M. Farrugia served in the Australian Army in infantry and reconnaissance, and studied film, television and professional writing. He worked as a post-production video editor, colorist and copywriter, where he earned the nickname Fagoogoo because no one could pronounce Farrugia.

Nathan is the author of the bestselling technothriller series The Fifth Column, which includes The Chimera Vector, The Seraphim Sequence and The Phoenix Variant, published by Momentum Books. Nathan is represented by Xavier Waterkeyn, Flying Pigs Literary Agency.

Nathan lives in Melbourne, Australia. In his spare time he practices lock picking and discovers hidden places around the world with urban explorers. Recommended for teenagers and adults alike

My usual reading list includes science fiction authors such as Peter Hamilton and Neal Asher, so I was delighted to come across The Chimera Vector, which is a bit of a genre blend, part science fiction and part action thriller.

I found The Chimera Vector to be a thoroughly enjoyable read, moving at a razorback speed toward a tense and heightened climax. The setting is a near and possible future, almost tomorrow, a time we can easily imagine as technology keeps pushing us forward.

Farrugia has a great grasp on this scenario, DNA therapy to `improve' humans, a female lead who fights for a principle, greedy men who seek power, and the author pits them all against each other. The story has many twists and turns, tragedy, and a hero's grim determination. Sophia is the main character, a woman that has been `altered', and is being used by the powers that run the `5th column', (a secret organisation/army), to supposedly eradicate `terrorism', but of course, there is more to this sinister plot, as Sophia has to discover!

She battles her way through constant and relentless obstacles, and it is in these battle scenes that Farrugia succeeds in great detail and conflict. The author has a background in the military and demonstrates a realistic grasp of weaponry, martial arts, survival and tracking that I found satisfying. He creates some of the best action scenes I've read, detailed, gritty, and, despite some of the futuristic elements, the story maintains a credible and believable atmosphere.

It's always great to see new writers emerging, especially good ones. I'm a teacher so I'm always on the look out for new books that will appeal to young readers (late teens) and this is one that I will be recommending both to teenagers and adults who enjoy everything from military thrillers to espionage and novels that explore futuristic visions.

I hope that "The Chimera Vector" is just the beginning and we get another book from this talented young author.

Intense action and technical accuracy

Some stories irritate you because it is clear the author doesn't know what he is talking about.
Farrugia has his technical details spot-on and the result is a great mix of international culture, genetic science and of course military action.

There is a particular intensity to every scene and the way the story is interwoven so you are getting the backstory for the main characters while the action just keeps rolling out, kept me wondering if I had picked up the second book in a series by mistake.

Overall a fun and fantastic read. A terrific military-techno thriller that is so close to possible reality, it should disturb you greatly.

Perfect beginning for this author

Reading like a cross between a Jason Bourne and Dollhouse story, Chimera Vector is a fine debut for this author. You know how first novels usually need help with plot & writing? Not here. The well-written story takes you into some great shadowy operative agency dealings, and keeps you there with action, information, suspense ... the whole lot. The characters are interesting enough also, and of course I had to wonder who was based on whom after looking at the author's bio. Uh-oh ... I've said too much.

I found this to be Susan Hughes' best novel yet. With complex and interesting characters, an intriguing setting and an irresistible love story, it's difficult not to read late into the night. I found myself falling for Sean and wondering what it would be like to be blind. Hughes conveys very well the challenges he would have faced. I enjoyed living (vicariously) in the 20s and found it fascinating to think of how things were then. Delicious love scenes whet the appetite for romance. A Sense of Touch is unforgettable.

This gentle love story leaves the reader with lingering images of love and a strong sense of place. Living in Nova Scotia, I was particularly thrilled with the novel because it so accurately depicts Halifax at the time of the Explosion. Hughes writing is clear and thoughtful and she particularly impresses with her ability to write from the perspective of a young blind man. A great balance of history and romance with a splash of spicy passion. A great read!

After decades of serious thought and contemplation, I would bet that if God does indeed exist, He (She or It) must surely have a wicked sense of humour! The only thing that makes sense, to me at least, other than complete random chance, is that God was bored and needed some new entertainment for a few centuries or millennia. So He set up the game of ‘humanity’. Within these pages, through use of both humour and logical reasoning, you will be challenged to reassess your relationship to your God (or Gods) and discover why, if one attempts to use logic and commonsense, most religious doctrine starts to collapse like a house of cards. If you are among those not secure enough in your own faith to subject it to scrutiny, you should probably NOT read this book. If, on the other hand, you are prepared to bring an open mind, you may find some new questions to your answers! This book is a sometimes serious, but more often humourous exposé of my personal musings, experiences and deductions on the topic of religion. I hope that you accept it in the lighthearted manner that it was conceived and written..

Excellent!

I really enjoyed this book! He opens with a quote by William Blake, which says in effect that if you don't decide for yourself what you believe, then you will be enslaved by someone elses' belief. What follows is a lighthearted look at some of the foibles of organized religion and his own personal journey, interspersed with some silly and entertaining jokes. As he says, there are no absolute truths to be found here, just some things to take note of and think about along with questions you should ask yourself. Highly recommended!

Another Satisying Yarn from Paul Grzegorzek

"When Good Men Do Nothing," UK crime writer Paul Grzegorzek's latest novel, opens with the blind date from hell, the secretive MI6, a pile of murders, a booby-trapped boat, government manipulation of the news and enough technical crime scene jargon to satisfy the most hardcore CSI fan.

And that's just in the first 100 pages. The rest of the novel fleshes out a terrorist conspiracy brought to light after an assassin goes on a killing spree.

As I noted in my review of Grzegorzek's fine debut, The Follow, the plot is framed by the author's experiences in UK law enforcement. They pad the story in this novel, too, lending an air of realism that can't be faked.

However, as anyone in law enforcement would tell you, that type of job consists of crushing boredom punctuated by brief bouts of terror. Fortunately, Grzegorzek wears his writer hat for most of "When Good Men Do Nothing." The chapters are short, the plot moves quickly, the action is constant and the mystery grows another leg whenever things look certain.

Outside of the terse plot, Grzegorzek continues the gruff cadence he introduced through Constable Gareth Bell in The Follow. Grzegorzek gives us Detective Sergeant Rob Steele this time around, although he's hardly different from Bell. There's the gallows humor, the rough treatment of low lifes, the air of invincibility and other similarities.

It had me wondering why Grzegorzek didn't just turn Bell into a recurring character. "When Good Men Do Nothing" could easily have been a prequel or sequel to The Follow, or at least been branded as part of a series within Grzegorzek's universe.

That's the writer in me thinking here. The reader enjoyed Grzegorzek's sense of dark humor, such as this passage from the beginning of chapter 18.

"Justin Evans was a cross between a garden gnome and something you'd wipe off your shoe before you got in the car."

I cracked a grin at that one and several others. It's part of the reason I enjoyed "When Good Men Do Nothing." I think you will, too.

When a Good Man writes another Good Book

When it came out, I bought Paul's first book - The Follow - and couldn't put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would also recommend it to lovers of crime fiction. I could tell then that Paul had writing talent.

With the arrival of When Good Men Do Nothing, I can safely say that something has changed about Paul's writing; it has matured & improved.

Where The Follow was great, When Good Men Do Nothing is brilliant. His pacing & storytelling has improved, (which is not to day that it wasn't damn good to start with), and WGMDN reflects this.

WGMDN is another page turner. The plot twists & turns just when you think you've figured things out, and there are characters you'll want to appear in subsequent books.

Anything else I say may be a spoiler, so you'll just have to read it for yourself & find out the enjoyable way... :)

Beautifully paced and wonderfully compelling, this is my first read of this author and I found it to be thoroughly enjoyable - the characters pop off the page and Mr Grzegorzek writes with an ironic humour that had me often smiling and always intrigued.

I liked Rob Steele as a protagonist - especially as his "job" was unique therefore the read was something slightly out of the ordinary for crime fiction, like a breath of fresh air. The supporting characters are great - I hope that there will be more from them, it certainly felt like they had a lot more to say!

The story is punchy, twisty and turny, just the way I like them. Kind of like the tv show "Spooks" on acid, you were never sure what little nugget of information was going to turn up next and switch things around. Clever writing. I like it.

I look forward to whatever comes next. Recommended for lovers of crime fiction who would like a slightly different but entertaining take on the genre.
