My previous life memories about the dog bond were a bit hazy. I could remember everything I ever knew about mining jex. I could remember several hundred commands that humans had taught me, in my previous lives. I knew that humans could bond with Kaxians (and with Niques, but who cared about them?). Everyone said the dog bond was lovely, something to strive for. I thought probably I had bonded with humans before, but I honestly could not remember for sure, and I could not remember what it was like. I thought it would be nice, though.

Fascinating Fun for Everyone!

I am a dog lover. We in our family have ALWAYS had dogs! However, I do not think it is a necessary requirement to adore dogs, to love this endearing book.
Why? The reason is because author Cherise Kelley cleverly employs a dog's voice as her narrator, and Clem (or Raffles, as he is later named) will show the reader WHAT it is about dogs which makes them so remarkably wonderful (so the reader may learn why dogs are so special). In addition, the story is just plain FUN for everyone!

The premise of this book is that the dog narrator is from an alien planet and all of his adventures begin there. He is a 6 month old puppy (or Kaxian, if you prefer the alien name of his ancestors), here on Earth to mine something called "Jax" which the Kaxians need, and we Earthlings do not.

However, as it turns out, there is a lot more to the story than that!

The author has taken her actual "in real life" dog, a rescued Australian Cow Dog, and used her incredible empathy and imagination to weave a tale of devotion and bravery, humor and excitement, fear and drama. Although Raffles is an alien from Kax, he is also clearly a heroic, loveable, outstanding character. I defy you not to care about him and what happens to him during the course of this completely unique book!

Dog Aliens 1: Raffles Name, is a very cool narrative, "mindfully written" (you will get what I mean when you read the book) intended for the YA group.

I would go further than that and say that the book targets anyone, young adult or older, who is a curious person. Anyone who is open to enjoying a story about the special bond between humans and wonderful, amazing, fabulous and fun dogs!!!

Promising start, but a little light on plot

I consider myself a dog lover, but I'm not the type to anthropomorphize animals with human traits and thoughts. So I guess for many dyed-in-the-wool dog lovers, I wouldn't count as a dog lover. Hence, the idea of dogs as sentient beings from other planets - big dogs from Kax and little dogs from Nique (where exactly the dividing line is is not completely clear) - is a little, well, alien to me.

Nonetheless, fiction is all about suspending disbelief and settling yourself into the author's world. In this regard, once you accept dogs as aliens, the opening several chapters of this book are quite promising. We meet Clem, a Kax puppy (six months old) who lives with his parents' humans on the eastern edge of Los Angeles, near the desert. Clem's parents are bonded with their humans and they stay with their master and mistress. Clem, however, is not bonded, and hence spends his days digging under the fence to go join his fellow Kaxians mining for jex in the desert, defending it from the Niques, and delivering it to Kaxian space vessels.

Jex is apparently the reason dogs, er, Kaxians and Niques, came to Earth many thousands of years ago. It is vital to them, but, despite the fact that it is plentiful on Earth, we humans don't need it, so the Kaxians mine it. The Kaxians were here first and the Niques are just trying to hone in on their supply. At least, according to the Kaxians. What exactly jex is or what it's used for is never quite explained, but it is apparently something that can be ingested, excreted and re-ingested as necessary. I don't think I want to know more.

So we spend a promising and productive day with Clem and his fellow Kaxian miners out in the desert. But when Clem returns home, everything starts to go wrong. One of his humans takes him out in the woods - for a walk and bonding, Clem believes. But then Clem finds himself abandoned in the woods. After a brief interlude with a she-wolf, Clem realizes he needs to get back and help his fellow Kaxians. Along the way, he discovers he has certain powers over humans when he manages to hitch a ride by playing a "mental movie" for a passing human.

Clem's new human, Randy, is definitely not a dog person, but seems to want to use Clem to impress his girlfriend, but she's more the Nique type (and who cares about them anyway?). Clem ends up shut in Randy's apartment doing Kaxian "shut-in" duty which seems to consist of relaying messages. Heg, Clem's boss, warns him not to say anything about his new-found powers over others' minds. For one thing, the fundamental Kaxian rule is that no human must ever find out about dogs being aliens. Clem's new arrangement, however, doesn't last long anyway and Clem is soon unceremoniously dropped at the pound.

Clem, like all the other dogs, is anxious to get adopted, largely so that he can continue his Kaxian work. With the help of some nudging from his new abilities, Clem outwits the Niques and gets his fondest wish (after helping his friend Lido get his fondest wish). Not only is he adopted, but he actually bonds with his new humans. Ah, bliss!

The only problem is that from there we seem to lose most traces of the story. The rest of the book is about Clem's - now renamed Raffle - new bonded life with his master and mistress (the latter of whom is suspiciously named Cherise Kelley - hmmm?). There are a few mentions of relaying messages and talking with Heg and the others from his crew, but we learn nothing further about mining, the battle with the Niques, or any other plot lines that seemed to have been in development. The book ends with Clem, er, Raffle getting a new "baby brother" who will apparently be a focus in a future sequel.

It is evident that this is only the prologue to what is supposed to be a much larger work. I have no problem with sequels, but each book in the series needs to have its own beginning, build-up and resolution. We get very little of the latter two elements in this book. Especially once Clem/Raffle is adopted, the author seems to lose herself in sharing everything about her real experience with her real dog, and we lose track of the character dog/alien. Ms. Kelley would probably be better served by skipping many of those details but just keeping them in her mind to weave into the story.

There are also strong religious overtones to the book. Clem was taught early to pray to Kax, but whenever he does, he doesn't get an answer. Or, well, he doesn't recognize the answer he gets. Until, that is, he has a come to Jesus, er, Kax moment in which he suddenly understands not only his own purpose on earth, but why Kaxians have stayed on earth for thousands of years.

It is clear that Ms. Kelley has good writing skills. Her sentence structure and word choices flow nicely and reading is easy and flowing. It is also evident that she has a passion for her subject and a strong relationship with her characters. There is potential for future books to be exciting and engaging adventures with some very original characters. But she needs to focus on channeling her story into a progressive plot rather than meandering with charming side stories that lead nowhere in particular. She also needs to have a clear idea of the central conflict, and the resolution thereto, for each separate book. I wish her well on future installments.

Okay to be completely honest I had low expectations for this book at the beginning. When I first saw it I figured it was going to be some goofy kids book about cats vs dogs and probably a waste of time but I thought about it for a moment and decided to give it a shot anyway and honestly I loved it. Its an adventure story of a puppy trying to find his place and to figure out his purpose in life. I honestly think it could possibly be written about a normal dog and be just as strong but it would be missing out on some creative details and moments. There is also some parts of a story about a Bulldog named Lido (Who by the way I want a book for him because I find him absolutely adorable)who is trying to win the girl (pup or mate)of his dreams and a She wolf, Who we learn very little about and I hope her book is just as good as Raffles story. Clem or Raffle is a great character, who goes through both good times and bad and constantly makes mistakes but I find myself rooting for him the whole way. I like that it is the little dogs that they are fighting against and the cats are the some what sane creatures trying to explain to the owners that there are aliens among them. I work at an animal shelter and trust me, I could possible see this happing in real life just by watching how the little dogs behave around the big dogs and I have a cat, who I almost sure that is based on Puritan (Who I can not help to feel a little bad and sorry for making her one of my favorite minor character in this book). The characters are great, the dialog is pretty good, and I liked the ending even though it leaves me with many questions needing to be answered. I think this is a great story for kids and is worth a read or two but do not take my word for it! Read it for yourself and form your own opinions on this earthbound book that is out of this world!

Parts Therapy step-by-step

Roy Hunter presents a therapeutic hypnotic technique that can be used for many problems. It works from the theory that the mind functions as if made up of parts that do the work for the subconscious mind. Accessing them directly for a logical discussion with them is the goal, utilizing mediation techniques like with family counseling or peacemaking or settling grievances between parties. It teaches a very gentle, logical, polite and effective method of communicating with many for the benefit of all.
The concept may seem far-fetched if you have not read or studied Ego states or Parts Therapy or hypnosis. Giving someone the idea that their mind has different personalities and directing communication to individual ones may seem potentially harmful. I've seen this concept abused and used to keep the patient coming in for regular visits for each part to communicate with the others and with the therapist having no endpoint but for income. The author is very careful NOT to perpetuate a dysfunctional mind but rather to integrate it, solve the problem and release the person quickly in a better condition than before. There are many variations of this technique but getting the basics and learning the high ethical standards from this learned author are highly recommended.

An Excellent Introductory Textbook of Parts Therapy

Like ego state therapy, parts therapy "is based on the concept that our personality is composed of a number of various parts. Our personality parts are aspects of the subconscious" (Hunter, p. 1). Roy Hunter views ego state therapy as a variation of parts therapy. Both ego state therapy and parts therapy derive from the work of Paul Federn and John G. Watkins. Admittedly, both address the same phenomena known elsewhere as "subpersonalities" or what C. G. Jung called "complexes" or "fragmentary personalities" and described in 1935 as "autonomous groups of associations that have a tendency to move by themselves, to live their own life apart from our intentions." The differences between parts therapy and ego state therapy seem to be matters of emphasis more than essentials. Both are dealing with the same reality, but the former approach is geared more toward "lay hypnotherapists" (hypnosis professionals who do not necessarily have additional clinical training or credentials) while the latter is more clinically-oriented. In this excellent introductory textbook of parts therapy author Roy Hunter credits his late mentor and "twentieth century hypnosis pioneer" (p. ix) Charles Tebbets with borrowing parts therapy from Federn and evolving it into a client-centered approach. (I was unaware of Tebbets' or Hunter's work when previously I reviewed Gordon Emmerson's Ego State Therapy on amazon.com.)

Hunter requires his students to read Emmerson's Ego State Therapy, and he cites that work several times in Hypnosis for Inner Conflict Resolution. Neither book is necessarily "better" than the other; rather each provides a strong complement to the other, enough so that one would do well to think of these books as forming a two-volume set. Each offers specific techniques not found in the other. Among the many strengths of Hunter's work are its organization; direct, easy-to-read writing style; and practical, judicious use of repetition to reinforce conceptual recall. It includes clear, step-by-step instructions on thoroughly preparing clients for parts therapy and facilitating the sessions. Hunter devotes an entire chapter to "Potential Pitfalls and Other Concerns," and he offers guidance on when to make referrals to (or seek supervision from) mental health professionals (e.g., when a lay hypnotherapist realizes that his or her client has dissociative identity disorder). One area in which Hunter's book surpasses Emmerson's work is in his section on working with what Emmerson calls "Inner Strength" but what others have termed the "Higher Self." Hunter acknowledges having often used "an application of parts therapy to access that part of the inner mind that is most closely connected to God, or the client's perception of Higher Power" (p. 167). His concern here is not with promoting a particular metaphysical viewpoint, however, but rather with empowering clients and promoting their access to untapped internal resources. Elsewhere--with respect to past life regression--I have said that the therapeutic value of such work trumps its literal truth or falsity. Hunter takes a similar perspective on working with "Higher Self": "my opinion does not matter, because the client was empowered" (p. 159) and "Whether or not one believes in God or a Higher Power, the subconscious (or unconscious) contains access to an inner wisdom that sometimes far surpasses that of ordinary consciousness" (p. 167). That Hunter's book includes an index and far fewer typographical errors than were at times a distraction in Emmerson's book also warrants favorable mention. Both books deserve wide professional readership and a place on the shelf of any hypnotherapist, addictions counselor, or trauma therapist.

A Feast For The Parts Of You That Need Integration & A Voice

This is a masterful work that step by step details the authors frame work for working on integrating the in congruent parts of our inner life. It can be used by hypnotherapists, as well as counselors and laymen for gleaning principles. But like most of these type works you will get the most from it by experimenting with it on your self with the questions and naming of those inner parts and listening to their voices, needs, motivations and wisdom. I believe you would be most able to be healing to others with these principles after making personal application for integrating your own inner voices and parts that conflict and help them to better negotiate. If you imagine a counseling session of a family and the different needs and parts and you helping their learning to understand each other and work together you get the gist of this book only the family is in side of each individual person. I instantly found myself becoming aware of deeper parts of myself and the naming the parts, list of questions and negotiation ideas are excellent to promote dialog and release. It seems that life challenges us continually to the experiences that must struggle with what is wisdom and balance. It many times involves the integrating of what first appears to be opposites but really reveal themselves to be balancing halves that when listened to and gleaned from open up a healing middle pathway and journey being all that you are. On another note there is excellent principles for using hypnosis for smoking cessation and getting past stuck points of the conflicting motivations of our inner parts.

I don't know the German book, Hannah got a English book.

I hate when Jeff Kinney write in German Edition! I give up, I HATE it!!

Man, I thought on everybody's mind.

The reason is, I have to be busy right now, so, don't tell me you're not good at me.

I haven't read the other two books after this one, but I hope they're not all full with other people's jokes as well.

Deliciously Good

Not being a huge fantasy reader, I was a bit intimidated by the description as to how fantastical this story would be. Luckily I was NOT greeted with my worst fear - a huge mystical, magical world the author just throws you inside of without explaining how a single thing works. To my even greater joy, I discovered that I didn't have to know a thing about the world or time period or society to understand the tale. I simply just had to read. Even the characters are not totally defined by their magical race. They're more defined by, well, their character.

There's a wonderful insight into the main character Felicia, a vampire who's sexy in an unexpected way. Most authors write vampires who rely solely on their looks to make them appeal to other characters and, most importantly, readers. Sure, Felicia has the looks and the charm, but she's attractive in a surprising way. The depth of her character is endless, and her wit is unmatched. Her personality is strong and bold, and she knows exactly what she wants. Not only is her story being explained to us (and, trust me, it's a captivating story, even when most of her past is unknown), Felicia herself comments on the events as they happen, giving us snippets of her direct thoughts - and more often than not they're sexual. Felicia's lustful personality and motivations make her my favorite character and inherently sexy as the author describes.

The plot is quite interesting. I won't give it away, but I'll just say you won't expect what the cure to Felicia's vampirism is. What the cure is could seem silly if it were written by any other author, but Zephyr Indigo pens it so smoothly you won't bat an eyelash when you find out what it is - and it's worth finding out.

This is a great first story for a series. It doesn't go too in depth of what all adventures will be had, what sets of obstacles will have to be faced, and even what consequences could arise from making a decision. It only gives you a taste of the true main plot - how Felicia can cure her unwanted vampirism - but that's all you need. Read this book and you'll be dying to read the next nine.

(Not to mention, the sex scenes are pretty damn hot.)

Vulgar

In all honesty I wasn't able to finish it. At first I was appreciative of the scenery and of the main character, but whenever I arrived at the first sex scene I had to put the book down because of the vulgar, cheap way that the sex was described and handled. In my opinion, language and descriptions are the barriers between erotica and pornography...I read erotica, not porn. I am very sorry to say that I am not impressed.

A nice twist on an old tale...

I wasn't certain what to expect, so I must confess my expectations were low. Most of these stories are the same fluff just different titles. I was surprised when I found that not to be the case this time. It was a breath of fresh air to find a storyline that hasn't been done to death. I wish the author had gone a little deeper in character development, but all in all, a very good read.
