You'll be glad you read this book.

Some time ago on an extremely cold January weekend, my wife and I cruised through an early draft of Ben Mulhern's Everybody Wants You Dead while holed up inside the charming Balsam's Hotel in Dixville Notch, NH. The book was in manuscript form and we read each page successively, occasionally offering a note or comment. What struck me during the first read was how much it reminded me of Christopher Rice's The Snow Garden. EWYD gave me a similar sense of time and space while really letting me feel the characters. Now that the final novel has "hit the shelves" I bought my Kindle version on day 1. I congratulate Mr. Mulhern and his team for polishing it into a great read and an "I've been there" feel of déjà vu. Pick this book up - and you won't be able to put it down.

Ben Mulhern's First Novel is a Winner

Everybody Wants You Dead is a great, fast-paced story with more than a few twists and turns along the way. I was drawn in from the first few words and the story was compelling all along. By the end it was one of those stay-up-later-than-normal moments in order to reach the conclusion. I downloaded this book on to my Kindle, which, of course is great as I was able to read it as soon as it was available. But I found myself wanting to flip back through the pages, physically, to check my memory of small details or to revisit a snippet of conversation or an image. I can't wait until it's out in print and will enjoy that version as well.

Just like your favorite crime drama!

Mulhern's Everybody Wants You Dead, clips along like your favorite crime drama. It is a fascinating premise - What would you do if you were implicated in your best friend's murder? The book is written in 3rd person and is told from a multitude of perspectives. It took me a few chapters to settle into the book and feel like I was connecting to the characters, but once it clicked I couldn't put it down. There are a few minor editing/formatting errors but none that detract from the story. It is well worth the $2.99 (kindle) price on Amazon.com

I was a fellow camp counselor with Mulhern many years ago and heard through the grapevine that he had published this book. It was fascinating to read a novel by someone I know, but I would have enjoyed the book even without my minor connection to it's author. I hope Ben will keep writing and I can spend a couple more late nights in the future reading a new work of his.

God, this book is freakin' filthy! Awesome ~ Goodreads reviewer. . WOW! what an amazingly unexpected story! I seriously didn't expect to love this story as much as I do. Sophie and Lucien are my new favorite couple. the Viking and the Princess. the love scenes were sexy and hot. I couldn't put the book down. I think I just might love this book more than Fifty Shades. Christian who? Gideon who? seriously, Lucien is now officially the sex God of all erotic novel sex Gods. WOW! I can't wait for the next book. Sabine, Amazon reviewer.

I think I have "minority" tattooed on my forehead...

People really seem to like this one, but to me Knight & Play was a whole lot of kinky sex and not much else. A whole lot of kinky sex. Okay...so what's the problem?? No seriously...what's the problem?

The problem is, I just didn't care. Nothing really made me invest anything into the story. Too much lust and not enough emotion. Also, the alternating point of views lacked the fluency I've seen in other books. Structurally it was well-written, but plot-wise...not so much.

I will say that it left me intrigued as to what direction the author will take with the sequel, and of course with that cliffhanger....I can't help but be a little curious.

Maybe it's my suppressed inner-prude that kept me from liking this book, but the whole adult entertainment industry angle was a turn-off. That being said, those who love quick lustful reads that get down and dirty...by all means, pick this one up. In fact, I may even read the sequel just because I'm more than a little curious of what's gonna happen next. READ ON!

As you can see, I have only rated this book 3 stars.
This is for a few reasons…. however firstly I will go through what I liked about this book.
Knight and Play is a hot read and this is mostly to do with Lucien, his words are highly seductive and he exudes that confidence that we have all come to know and love from our sexy book boyfriends. It is well written and that although similar to some stories out there, it had enough of a different story line to seem fresh.
In saying that, there were things about this book that I didn’t like.
Like Lucien I have a real problem with cheating. Sometimes, totally depending on how it is written, I can handle it. But there was something about Knight and Play that made me uncomfortable. Yes, Sophie’s husband is cheating but does that mean that she should be free too?
I didn’t understand Lucien’s need to get Sophie to do the things he wanted her to do. Why is he so keen? Why does he seem to think this will solve all her problems? Does he like her? Is it for revenge? Is he just a jerk who is used to getting what he wants? So many questions… and of course we are just starting to get to the point when we may get some of those answers when we reach my next problem in the book.
It’s a cliffhanger!!!! Argh, I know I am not the only one who get’s totally frustrated with reading a great book only to find you have to buy two more to get the answers you seek. This book had started to wane for me a bit and then in the last chapter or so I started to get a bit more excited, emotions were starting to show and I was getting excited. Then….. tense moment… the end. Next book due in April. Grrrrr I admit that this ending gave me enough to intrigue me into getting the next one.
One more little thing was, the foreplay in this book was great, the flirting off the charts hot. But when it got down to the nitty gritty, I felt a little gypped. I can’t quite put my finger on why; maybe the way it was written. However, I just couldn’t get into the sex scenes. I wouldn’t complain about this if it was just a romance book, but it is an erotic novel, so the sex is kind of important
This book is advertised as being “Romantic, emotional & intensely erotic”. I definitely get the emotional and the erotic part, but at no stage did I feel the romance. I think I needed a bit more character information from Lucien for that to work for me.
Sorry, I do not mean to be a big Debbie downer on this book. It was enjoyable and I did really like certain parts, but as a whole there was something just not right about it for me. I am sure this could have been personal, as I said I don’t like reading about cheating. Maybe if I got the whole story instead of just the first bit I could come to a better conclusion and see things more clearly, but as it stands this was only a “good” read for me, not a great one.

Speak up, woman!

I can't even finish this book. The woman in the story, who the book is supposed to be about, has maybe 10 spoken lines throughout the story. She's an idiot. Also, the book does develop the relationship between man and woman before they dive straight into the sex. So, she's basically cheating on her husband with a pompous jerk who doesn't seem to even care for her. Ugh. Not for me.

A peek inside the life of one of our greatest authors

The Black Count starts off as a marvelous, brave tale describing the way blacks were treated in France the 2 centuries before before Napoleon Bonaparte came into power, and the influence thereafter on the unlikely man who would become Alexander Dumas who would then give us the magnificent Count of Monte Cristo and it's more famous brother, The Three Musketeers.

The author masterfully gives us 2 hours of background in the centuries leading up to the birth of Dumas' father known as "The Black Count" and then the unlikely story of Dumas' rise to fame, not only because he was a genius of a writer. He was a grand character (both men, really) in this snappy rendition of the slightly mysterious Alexander Dumas... a huge celebrity during his time here who left this world at much too young of an age.

I don't like to give away everything in a review, and I'll continue that tradition here, but if you are a lover of Dumas' books as I am (TCOMC is my favorite book of all time), then you will love this well told story of how it came to be that an obese mulatto becomes one of the most cherished authors of all time and a major celebrity during his all too brief life in Paris.

This is a great book for history lovers, biography lovers and really, anyone interested in black culture or in ancient France (and how their policies toward blacks may have shaped our own 200 years ago) and just about anyone else. It is a joyous, intriguing story of how one of how this great, great author came to be and lived his life and how his father's life shaped his own. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It's one of the best books I have listened to in so long. I am giving 5 stars for narration, but it's nothing special, except that it is expertly done. It's a straightforward read, since there are no "characters" to play. It's the story that really shines here.

By all means, treat yourself to this wonderful little known bit of history. You will be a richer person for doing it. And if you haven't read the unabridged The Count of Monte Cristo yet, you won't be able to resist after this. I'll probably have to re-listen to it now. Be sure to look for the one read by John Lee, available on Audible.com, which is so masterfully read and executed.

Perfect for my talented 12 year old

This book is exactly what I had been looking for to help my 12 year old daughter take her nail designs to the next level. I bought her this book, a set of brushes, and her first set of dotting tools for Christmas. She was THRILLED. She has been able to recreate designs from this book and is very proud of herself for doing so (as am I).

A Captivating Read

First let me start off by saying that if you're thinking about reading this book, read Mitchell's first book, The Nexus. It sets the tone for this book, and you'll be pretty lost if you just jump into The Dark Beneath. With that being said, let me move on to my review.

This book picks up very smoothly where The Nexus left off, following Jill, Corey, Amber, Bradley, Dizzie, and Director Holiday's lives as underground crime fighters. While the first book, The Nexus, did a good job of setting up the story, this book focuses more on Character background and development, which makes the core of characters relatable, as well as at some points hard to like. They're not just some action heroes in a far off story. They're young (mostly) men and women who struggle with their place in life and with their future, as well as their heart's struggle between good and evil. They're very real characters.

Mitchell does a good job developing the characters while adding some gripping, not-gonna-put-this-book-down action and plot twists. He's found that style of writing that is both quality and addicting.

In summary, this is a story that has relatable characters, a solid plot, is well written, and is just flat out fun.

Book Two a winner again

The wait for the next book from J. Kraft Mitchell was well rewarded. Love the development of the characters. Nice set up for the next book too! Hope it is not too far behind.

The story line for this book kept me drawn in from the first few pages right to the end. This will be gifts for the teenagers in the family this year!

A great follow up to the Nexus

I just finished reading The Dark Beneath (The Nexus), book two in the Nexus series. First off if you didn't read The Nexus you will have a hard time getting into the story line. This book picks up right where The Nexus left off, continuing the story of Anterra's top secret crime fighting division. The writing is very good with the storyline at times introspective, looking at the real life struggles and flaws of the characters, and at times as pulse pounding as the best thrillers I have read. I was kept guessing right up to the end about which way things were headed and when I finally reached the last page there was enough closure to say "I can wait for the next book in the series" and enough intrigue to say "I can't wait for the next book in the series". Well done J Kraft Mitchell. Keep em coming.

Keep them coming!

I have read all of the Lucy Stone mysteries and enjoy them. This latest installment was no exception. I was first drawn to the series when I read a Lucy Stone short story in a Christmas compilation. I then read all of the mysteries in chronological order and loved the progression of Lucy's family. The books have slowed down a bit as Lucy has gotten older, which is fine. I just wish they had gone a bit slower towards the beginning! I also read the Hannah Swenson mysteries by Joanne Fluke, and I prefer Lucy Stone mysteries because they seem a bit more realistic. Obviously reading a mystery series based in a small town requires you to suspend a lot of belief, but you either accept that or not. If it's not your cup of tea, stick to single novels or mysteries based in larger cities. I love reading about Tinker Cove, so Chocolate Covered Murder was a nice return after English Tea Murder which took place in England. This was a fun read and a nice little foray back into Lucy Stone's life. I will keep reading so long as Leslie Meier keeps writing!

delightful sweet cozy

The weather outside is frightful in wintery Tinker's Cove, Maine, but that does not prevent Pennysaver reporter Lucy Stone from completing her outdoor chores. She drops off her children at their various jobs and reports on the new exquisite chocolate shop Chanticleer's Chocolates owned by Trey Meacham. One of Lucy's youngest offspring works at Chanticleer's Chocolates; but Lucy does not think the store manager Tamzin Graves is a good influence so she gets her daighter fired.

Tragedy strikes when fisherman Max Fraser falls through the ice. The ME rules it an accident, but Lucy who owed Max believes a murder occurred. To pay the late Max back, Lucy investigates. A second death occurs when the chocolate covered naked Tamzin lies dead in Chanticleer's. The police arrest co-owner Dora of Fern's Famous Fudge, but Lucy believes the suspect is innocent. Her inquiry places her on the list of a murderer observing her investigation.

This delightful sweet (unless you're the victims) cozy will please fans of the series as the readers catch up on the lives of residents of Tinker's Cove. The protagonist risks her life though she fails to see the peril in front of her nose until it slams into her protuberance from a killer hiding in plain sight.

I love Lucy Stone mysteries and have read most of them. They aren't great literature, but offer a respit from my world for a few hours. This particular one isn't better or worse than the others, just right on par for this author.
