"Absolute" Beginners may not be an entirely true statement.....
By katlover
Let me start by saying that I got through the book. I made some basic apps. I now have a very basic understanding of Xcode: enough to make a linear "click here, it takes you there" type of interface with the storyboards.

Let me follow by saying I have never coded anything before in my entire life; I have only looked at HTML and CSS to debug some stuff (VERY basic) this year.

In that sense, the fact that I could complete a functional app on my own... well, it means the book worked. However, I still do not understand over half of what I did or why I did it.

I think this book is a great start. But I also think that an Instructional Designer needs to rip it apart and reconstruct it with proper headers, sidebars, annotations, and other indicators to let readers easily determine when the author is telling you something basic and important, interesting but unnecessary, or altogether irrelevant to the task at hand (he likes to go on tangents). I also think that the interactive links in the book for forums, videos, and other useful information (the images for the projects, for example) should be simplified (they are really difficult to re-type).

Let me end with this: I have heard that this is the best book out there for beginners. Those who had coded in other languages before seemed to have no trouble with it, and even got a little frustrated with the "oversimplified" or "over-analyzed" passages about the process and the code. Since this is the only experience I have had with coding or with learning coding from a book, my review probably isn't worth a whole lot.....

Helpful and Like It

I just bought this book a few days ago and I am already on Chapter 5. I am from graphic design background so reading this book can really put me to sleep faster than taking NyQuil. The book is outdated at this point since I am using iOS SDK 7.0 (Xcode 5) now to learn from this book but the foundation of learning Xcode in this book remains universal. This book can't be the only source you will need to learn it from. I find it more helpful by using cross references including checking other tutorials in YouTube, checking out forums, Stackoverflow website, and Lynda website....etc and you will get that "Ah-ha" moment. Dr. Rory Lewis's video also helps to clarify his book's visual directions. Since Xcode 5 is a bit different than what he is using (Xcode 4), when you are on Chapter one just make sure you place underscore before typing "label" in "ViewController.m" (ex: _label) in order for it to work. Some parts of the book you just have to read it once or twice and come back later to re-read again and then you get it. After all, this is programming language, I am not learning how to make instant noodle here so I have to constantly reminding myself in order not to get discourage. Walking away from it momentary, doze off once in a while, or go to sleep and rest for one day also helps reset my brain. Dr. Rory Lewis is a professor so his style of teaching is like being in a university.... very thorough, details and he tells you when to take a break. The book also contains some sense of humor. Like the title said, it's for "Absolute Beginners". So you will need to move on to the next intermediate level after finishing this book.

I gave it one star less because it's in Xcode 4 version. Occasionally I have to search outside of this book to find out the Xcode 5 way of doing it. In his book, "nib" in Xcode 4 is actually "storyboard" in Xcode 5. The different is minor but you will get the hang of it once you know the differences. Also searching outside of this book actually helps understanding many programming language better and also keeps you from getting bore. Good Luck.

This is the book for me
By Qianjun
The 1st time I saw this book is from a friend, I have checked out over a dozen iPhone books from his device. All other books all drive me to dead-end, it gets too complicated eventually, and I just couldn't able to continue, and then I saw this book, it was so simple to understand and easy to follow. Mr Lewis is so funny, and he has very delightful personality.
Since I use the newest Xcode, and my friend's copy is slightly outdated, plus $13 seems affordable to me, so I bought a new e-book from amazon. I love his principle that it's ok to not understand these concepts 100%, with this assurance, I was able to read other objective-C books with very little burden at heart.

I am born and raised in China, I self-taught myself English and eventually passed LSAT and got into a law school in D.C, so I agree with him that I don't have to understand it 100%, I can keep some vagueness, some blurry feels of how things are done until I read another chapter or another book, and have a "Aha" moment, connecting these dots naturally. It was not easy to understand LSAT, and certainly more difficult to read Civ Pro, I was not some sort of genius, but I know I can do it, as long as after I was bored to death and falling sleep, I can still wake up and keep reading more. I will get there. People often fail because they got discourage after a few obstacles and stop any further efforts. Because Mr Lewis I realized learning Xcode was exactly like learning English, force yourself to do more than you can and ignore failures like falling sleep, unable to understand the book fully. Keep trying, and I will get there.
I am glad I have a great beginning teacher like Mr Lewis, via this book. I was able to make some simple apps, it's a good beginning. (Beginning is the hardest, while ironically, perfection is actually not hard, it's all about your commitment and how high your standard is)

After I watched his videos on Youtube, I have to say, this is first time, I feel fun of learning these dry, painful codes. After I watched the video, I was amazed, it feels like so effortless, so easy and fun.
I am a absolute beginner, so I can say this book, may not for everyone, but it was a right book for me.
Thank you, Mr Lewis! Please write more and make more videos! :)
