Enjoyable with the proper mix of two worlds
By M. Beck
DFV is a book I have been considering buying for a while, and when I found myself looking at a few free hours I pulled the trigger and picked it up.

I tend to read Dale Brown, Michael Connelly, Edward Aubry, David Baldacci, Alex Berenson, Vince Flynn... I think you get the point. I gravitate towards the mystery/action genre and enjoy books that sometimes take it a step further with speculation or suspension of disbelief.

Having read the Hetman series by Alex Shaw, I was looking forward to his foray into a new concept. What I enjoyed about this book was the integration of the vampire aspect. You're not hit over the head with it and it fits into the backstory well. Questions are left open for the sequel, which is not an issue for me but could be for some impatient readers.

One review pointed out a couple inconsistencies, but I was engaged to the point that I didn't pick up on those. That's quite a feat as I tend to be the one to pull any grammatical, spelling or character issues as I read.

I am looking forward to the second installment in this series and would highly recommend this book to anyone searching for a couple days of relaxing reading.

Great new twist on an old tale!
By Michael P.
I normally don't read vampire stories because they seem to be targeted to teenagers, but I bought this one because I enjoyed Shaw's Hetman books, and decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did. Shaw is very knowledgeable of Soviet history, including the Soviet military and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and he applies that knowledge to good effect in the plot of Delta Force Vampire. Other reviewers have already detailed the plot, so I'll skip that and simply say that I was pleasantly surprised by Shaw's new twist on an old tale (vampires), and by his skillful use of the current war in Afghanistan as the setting for this story. I truly looked forward to picking up this story again after each break. It was a fun read, and I would love to see it picked up for film. I give it 4.5 stars, and the only reason I'm taking away half a star is because of the typos and occasional run-on sentences. But, don't let that scare you away from a well-executed story that is much more interesting, to me, than most vampire stories. I look forward to the next one!

Brad Black. Delta Force and vampire
By claudette valliere
Liked this one from page one. Pretty damned good read.

Brad Black, call sign Peter Pan, is a Delta Force operator.

He and the Delta team he's a member of are set to attack a cave complex in Afghanistan. A cave complex thats supposed to house jihadists.

Once inside they find a room that was walled off. This room has several bodies in it. Bodies of dead Soviets. They have been sealed in that room for twenty five years.

Black is caught in a cave in after he and his team have been attacked by men they never really get a good look at. Men of exceptional strength.

Black comes to surprised to find himself still alive. He then meets Sergey Krasnov. Krasnov is the man who pulled him out of the cave. The man who saved his life.

Krasnov is also a vampire. A vampire who has turned Black into a vampire. Something Black is having one hell of a time believing.

Krasnov is on a mission. A mission thats waited for twenty-five years. A mission to remove an ancient vampire. Vladimir Dratshev. A mission he would like Blacks help completing.

Dratshev is a vampire. A vampire with an agenda. He and his men have turned some of Blacks teammates. They are now vampires. Vampires with Delta force training.

Dratshev is trying to create vampires who can move in the sunlight. He will do anything to achieve his goals. His men, Blacks teammates included, will do whatever Dratshev tells them to do and they have no problem killing anyone who gets in their way.

Unknown to Dratshev Black is a vampire who can be out in sunlight. He's a Ra-Hadok according the Krasnov. A vampire that sunlight doesn't affect. This is a fact Black finds out when he shoots Krasnov, he thinks he's killed Krasnov, and heads back to Firebase Python. He's able to walk in full sunlight and does make it back to base where he is greeted by the surviving members of his team.

On the way back he kills two jihadists and drinks their blood. This is something that is now almost automatic for him. He realizes that blood is what he needs. He can eat regular food but he knows blood is what he needs to survive. He's stronger, faster and nothing can hurt him. Black is amazed and in a world of confusion about his new circumstances.

So begins one pretty damed good read.

This one has Black, his teammates, Krasnov, vampires, jihadists, an Afghani who is aware of vampires, commanders who have a hard time believing whats in front of their eyes, a Govt that wants Black, a Russian vamp who wants Black and Brad Black trying to figure out his new life.

Black and Ibanescu, a Delta operator, a friend, a man Black turned in order to save his life, are whisked away by a Govt entity, Detachment V. Black meets Professor Adam Thurlbeck who is part of Detachment V. He's also a vamp.

One great read and I'll be waiting for number two. Five Stars
